A MarkDownload alternative for Chrome
MarkDownload was the best-known way to save a web page as Markdown, and it's no longer in the Chrome Web Store. If you used it to copy pages into notes or AI chats, here is how AI Markdown Copier compares, and which extension to choose if you want MarkDownload as it was.
What happened to MarkDownload
As checked on 9 October 2026:
- Its Chrome Web Store address now opens an empty store page with no extension on it.
- Users reported the store's message in issue #357 on 13 November 2024: "This extension is no longer available because it doesn't follow best practices for Chrome extensions."
- The source code is still public. Its extension manifest is Manifest V2, the older format Chrome has retired, and the last commit on its main branch is from 23 August 2024.
- It's still listed on Firefox Add-ons (version 3.2.0, last updated 26 September 2022), so Firefox users can keep using it.
How it compares
MarkDownload's features are from its user guide and manifest; AI Markdown Copier's are from its docs. "Pro" marks a feature of the paid plan.
| AI Markdown Copier | MarkDownload | |
|---|---|---|
| Finds the main content | Mozilla's Readability, converted with Turndown | Mozilla's Readability, converted with Turndown |
| Main output | Copy to the clipboard, or download a .md file | Download a .md file; copy from the right-click menu |
| Selection only | Yes, from the right-click menu; code stays code | Yes |
| Every tab in the window | One document with a table of contents (Pro) | Downloads every tab as Markdown |
| Header and templates | Title and source on top; YAML front matter and your own templates (Pro) | Front and back templates with variables; YAML-style front matter by default |
| Images | Image links on or off | Can download the images next to the .md file, with Obsidian embed styles |
| Obsidian | No direct link; paste or download | Send a tab to Obsidian, with the Advanced Obsidian URI plugin |
| Size check for AI chats | Token, character and word estimate, and whether it fits most chats | Not in its guide |
| Stack Overflow and Stack Exchange | The question and every answer, with votes | Not in its guide |
| Chunks for RAG | Split at headings into chunks sized in tokens; JSON Lines download (Pro) | No |
| Chrome extension format | Manifest V3 | Manifest V2 |
| Access asked for at install | The page you're on, only when you use it (activeTab); all-sites access only for Pro's all tabs, handed back afterwards | All sites (<all_urls>), downloads, clipboard and the rest |
AI Markdown Copier sends nothing you copy anywhere. Its only network request is a Pro license-key check with Polar, carrying the key and nothing else (privacy policy).
When another extension fits better
- You want MarkDownload as it was. MarkSnip describes itself in its store listing as "a Manifest V3 fork of MarkDownload by deathau". It's the closest match for templates, image downloads and Obsidian.
- You save pages into an Obsidian vault. Obsidian's own Obsidian Web Clipper is built for that.
- You're on Firefox. MarkDownload itself is still there.
AI Markdown Copier is the better fit when the Markdown is headed for an AI chat: clean content with its source, a size check before you paste, and the smallest access we could give it.
Try it
AI Markdown Copier isn't in the Chrome Web Store yet. The docs describe everything it does, its shortcuts and its permissions, and will carry the store link once the listing is live.
